MPs overwhelmingly reject assisted Dying Bill
On 11th September the latest attempt to liberalise the current law and introduce assisted suicide was comprehensively defeated in the Commons. The Assisted Dying Bill was soundly rejected by MPs at Second Reading with 330 MPs voting against the legislation and 118 voting in favour. Read more………
UK first in palliative care ranking
The UK ranks first in the 2015 Quality of Death Index, a measure of the quality of palliative care in 80 countries around the world released by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Its ranking is due to comprehensive national policies, the extensive integration of palliative care into the National Health Service, a strong hospice movement, and deep community engagement on the issue. The UK also came top in the first Quality of Death Index, produced in 2010. Read more......
Palliative Care Bill
The Access to Palliative Care Bill had its second reading (the general debate on all aspects of the Bill) in the House of Lords on 23rd October. The committee stage (line by line examination of the Bill) is yet to be scheduled. Baroness Ilora Finlay, a palliative care doctor who introduced the Bill, wrote,” We need more efficient and equitable care and support for those most in need…. Despite the UK being a global leader in the provision of palliative care services, there is a lot that needs to be done in order to be able to claim that patients, their families and their carers in this country get the care and support they deserve.” Read more.........
