Planned Parenthood under fire
Although we usually focus on life issues in the UK we feel that recent revelations concerning Planned Parenthood are of sufficient concern to report in image news.
Planned Parenthood (PP) is the USA’s single largest provider of abortion services. In the last fiscal year they received $528 million in US taxpayer support. @
The organisation has come under intense scrutiny after the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) released a series of videos it says shows that the non-
Hearts, lungs, livers
In the first video, actors posed as buyers in an undercover investigation and they discussed purchasing organs with Dr. Nucatola, Senior Director of Medical Services for PP, at a lunch in California in July 2014. Dr. Nucatola is seen eating a salad and drinking wine as she lists the organs that sell the best, noting that many individuals are looking to purchase livers.
Dr. Nucatola discusses extraction techniques that will not damage fetal organs, and even gives prices for the parts ranging from $30 to $100, “We’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact.” @
If the price is low, “Then we can bump it up”
In the second video, Dr Mary Gatter, President of PP of America’s Medical Directors’ Council, is seen negotiating prices with undercover investigators posing as representatives of a tissue procurement company.
She says: “We don’t want to be in a position of being accused of selling tissue and stuff like that. On the other hand, there are costs associated with the use of our space and all that kind of stuff. So what were you thinking about?” When one of the investigators asks her to open negotiations, Gatter says: “Well, you know in negotiations the person who throws out the figure first is at a loss”.
Dr Gatter concludes negotiations saying, “Let me just figure out what others are getting, and if this is in the ballpark, then it’s fine, if it’s still low, then we can bump it up”, before joking, “I want a Lamborghini”. She also talks about the different methods used to carry out an abortion and says that she would ask a surgeon to use alternative procedures so as to increase the likelihood of obtaining “whole specimens”. @
The third video features two doctors dissecting aborted fetal tissue while discussing the pricing of the parts with a potential buyer. There is also an interview with a woman who used to work in a Planned Parenthood clinic for the company StemExpress and was tasked with procuring tissue from aborted fetuses. @ StemExpress is a for-
Keeping an aborted baby alive to harvest the heart
In the seventh undercover video a former technician for a tissue harvesting company details how an aborted baby was kept alive so that its heart could be harvested at a California PP facility, raising more legal questions about the group’s practices. Holly O'Donnell, a former blood and tissue procurement technician for StemExpress, also said she was asked to harvest an intact brain from the late-
StemExpress has now cut its ties with PP, stating, “We value our various partnerships but, due to the increased questions that have arisen over the past few weeks, we feel it prudent to terminate activities with Planned Parenthood.” @
As of 27th August 2015 CMP have released nine undercover videos.
Sifting through a dish of body parts
Writing in Time magazine, Senators Joni Ernst, Rand Paul and James Lankford have written an article to respond to these videos.
It begins, “‘Another boy!’ Typically, we think of these words from a sonographer or an expectant mother during an 18-
“This week though, we heard these words come from the mouth of a PP employee as they sifted through a dish of body parts from an aborted baby boy as they worked to isolate organs for sale.”
They continue, “Polite company does not want to discuss what really happens to children in an abortion clinic. For those brave enough to watch the videos, they have been horrified by the utter lack of compassion shown for these women and their babies.
“Tiny arms, legs and organs are placed in dishes and picked apart with tweezers. Unborn babies are seen as valuable – not as a new life, but as the source of parts eligible for sale. One employee haggles over prices and another discusses the benefit of selling individual organs rather than whole children because, ‘Per item works better so we can see how much we can get out of it.’”
The senators argue, “If they are human organs outside of the womb, they had to be human inside the womb. It is disingenuous for PP to say in one moment that it is just fetal tissue, but in another moment acknowledge that it is human baby organs to be harvested and sold for medical research. Children in the womb are still children.
“These videos are hard for anyone to defend, and they pull back the curtain on PP’s callous actions that strike the moral fabric of our society. The American people have just cause to be horrified by the actions of PP. Protecting the most vulnerable in our society is an important measure of any society.” @
An attempt in the American Senate, led by Senator Rand Paul, to block further funding was recently defeated by a vote of 53-
PP have accused CMP as being extremists who, “show a total lack of compassion and dignity for women’s most personal medical decisions.” @
